For the first The Beaufort Journal of 2025, we met with artist and print designer Frankie Penwill in her London home. Frankie’s art is heavily influenced by the great outdoors, this inspiration is fused with bold colours and patterns to create timeless classics. We spoke to her to find out more about her work, her top tips for selecting art for your home, and how she found her own sense of style.
Frankie, thank you so much for being part of The Beaufort Journal, tell us - what is your favourite thing about your job?
Every day is completely different. One day I can be doing admin, one day I could be painting, going to an exhibition. I love the flexibility of doing different things every day.
What’s your top tip for selecting art prints for a home?
Buy whatever you absolutely love, I think your home should be a collection of things that you love and that you cherish. And then they'll all work together. My favorite quote is that your art should never match your sofa, so be bold and be colourful.
Do you think there is a synergy between how you dress and what art you enjoy?
Definitely, mainly in the colours. I wear lots of blues and oranges and they're the main colours I use in my artwork.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Always getting out the house. Doing some exercise, going for a walk and then coming home, doing some sketches, doing some painting. Not being rigid with what I want to do because I think that's when it can halt the creativity.
Frankie, you’re originally from Devon but lives in London, how does the mix of countryside, coastal and city influence your work?
Moving to London from Devon meant that I was away from the countryside and away from the sea and beautiful greenery. I wanted to use a lot of that in my work, it reminds me of home. I use loads of flowers and shells to bring in that Devon life to London.
How do you source inspiration for new collections?
I just like being outside and exploring what's around me, that’s when creative ideas come to me versus being sat at home with a paintbrush or pen and paper.
What is your top tip for finding your sense of style?
Buying pieces that you really love and investing in pieces that you'll have forever. Each season you can bring them out again and feel great in them.
What do you hope 2025 will bring?
In 2025, I'd like to achieve a lot of things with my work, one main thing is to use different mediums to bring my pieces to life.
We can’t wait to see what you do next.
